Section 1: The Camp Itself
Although Camp Jaie Reau exists only within the pages of fiction, its roots reach back to a very real place—a camp nestled in Wichita County, Texas. That old camp, surrounded by Ashe juniper, pecan, and cedar elm with the occasional prairie wind, served as the spark that grew into something larger: a world where imagination gives shape to memory.
Set on a spectacular piece of land that juts into Lake Jaiera (pronounced “Jai-era”), Camp Jaie Reau feels almost carved by time itself. The camp is surrounded on three sides by the lake, leaving only its southern edge as the single entrance by land—a narrow dirt road winding through oak and cedar before reaching the weathered wooden sign that welcomes all who enter.
From above, Camp Jaie Reau looks like a peninsula of discovery, wrapped in blue water and mystery. Trails weave along the shoreline, leading to docks, lookout points, and quiet places known only to returning campers. To the east, sunlight shimmers across the rippling lake. To the north, the water deepens into shadow. And to the west, after the waters, the forest thickens—its trails twisting toward stories no one quite dares to tell aloud.
At the camp’s heart stands the main lodge, its screen doors creaking softly in the summer wind. Ten cabins—five for boys and five for girls—stretch across two ridges overlooking the water, each one marked by a painted door in red, green, yellow, blue, or orange, their colors faded but proud. The mess hall comes alive every morning with laughter, the clatter of tin trays, and the aroma of pancakes drifting through open windows. Behind it lies The Slab, a broad concrete gathering place where campers meet for announcements, games, or late-night storytelling under the stars.
Down by the water on the north side of the camp, wooden docks reach into the lake beside rows of canoes and diving boards. The archery range, tucked into the northwest corner, is marked by worn targets and the faint thud of arrows against straw. At the opposite end, near the camp’s entrance on the southern edge, stand the old barn and groundskeeper’s house—the first and last buildings visitors pass before the camp road fades back into forest.
Every path, porch, and cabin seems to remember the footsteps of children who once ran past—echoes of summers long gone still lingering in the air. Camp Jaie Reau feels suspended in a perpetual summer—the kind that never quite fades, no matter how many years pass. The air carries the cedar-sweet scent of juniper mingled with distant campfire smoke. At night, the camp hums with crickets, laughter, and the quiet sense that some part of it is always awake… watching, waiting, remembering.
Section 2: The World of Camp Jaie Reau
The world of Camp Jaie Reau lives somewhere between dream and memory—close enough to touch, yet impossible to pin to any map. It’s a place where the sun always seems to set in shades of gold and tangerine, where the lake mirrors the sky so perfectly that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.
Beyond the cabins and laughter lies a wilderness that feels alive. Lake Jaiera stretches wide and deep, its waters glimmering with colors that shift from silver in the morning to deep sapphire by night. Sometimes the surface lies still as glass; other times, it moves with unseen currents, as though stirred by something waiting just beneath.
The land surrounding the camp carries the rugged beauty of Texas itself—wild yet welcoming. Tangled canopies hum with cicadas, and the air holds the faint sweetness of sap and warm earth. Trails wind through these woods, sometimes narrowing into secret paths that seem to appear where none existed before. Campers often say the forest feels aware—changing subtly from one day to the next, as if deciding who may pass.
Time flows differently at Camp Jaie Reau. Clocks work, but no one really trusts them. Days stretch long, nights linger, and the light itself feels thicker—golden, patient, and old. When campfires crackle under the velvet sky, sparks rise into constellations that seem to rearrange themselves, whispering stories older than the camp’s oldest cabins.
This world is more than a place—it’s a presence. The camp responds. It listens. It tests. It rewards courage and reveals truth. Some say Camp Jaie Reau protects those who believe in it; others whisper that it shows you who you really are.
For those who spend a summer here, the camp becomes part of them—a quiet, mysterious heartbeat that never fades. Even after the buses pull away and the cabins fall silent, something at Camp Jaie Reau keeps watching the horizon, waiting for the next dawn… and the next story.
Section 3: The Spirit of Camp Jaie Reau
Yet beyond all its mystery, Camp Jaie Reau means something simpler—and far more real.
At its heart, Camp Jaie Reau isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling. It’s the sound of laughter echoing through the trees, the smell of campfire smoke clinging to shirts, and the hum of cicadas beneath a sky thick with stars. It’s friendship formed in the simplest moments—sharing stories in the dark, racing to the docks before sunrise, or watching the lake shimmer while time stands still.
The spirit of the camp is built on the idea that every person carries a story worth telling, and sometimes, all it takes is a summer to discover what that story is. At Camp Jaie Reau, courage is learned in silence, trust is earned in laughter, and imagination grows wild beneath the wide Texas sky. It reminds us to look closer, listen longer, and believe that even the smallest choices can shape something lasting.
For the author, Camp Jaie Reau began as more than fiction—it began as memory. Growing up in Wichita County, Texas, I spent my summers at a camp not unlike this one. It was there that the foundation of my character was formed—where I learned the joy of volunteering, the value of teamwork, and the beauty of making friends from every background and walk of life.
It was also where I earned my very first job: one summer as a junior counselor, another as a kitchen helper, heating up easy sides and washing dishes long after the dining hall had quieted. Those were simple days, but they were filled with laughter, purpose, and the kind of quiet satisfaction that comes from being part of something larger than yourself.
Most importantly, that camp is where I first realized what I wanted to do—to write stories. Not just any stories, but ones that captured the feeling of a place where magic hides in the ordinary, and friendships can shape the course of a lifetime.
And so, Camp Jaie Reau was born—a fictional world rooted in real memories, carried forward by imagination, and written for those who still believe in the wonder of a summer that never truly ends.
Section 4: The Future of Camp Jaie Reau
The world of Camp Jaie Reau is only just beginning. What started as a single spark—an idea inspired by one camp in Wichita County, Texas—has grown into something much larger: a living, breathing world that continues to expand through every story, every journal, and every page written beneath its summer skies.
My goal is to let Camp Jaie Reau grow across generations and genres, giving readers of all ages a way to experience its magic. The camp will continue to live through its novels, journals, diaries, activity books, coloring books, and much more. Each format offers a different window into the world—some filled with mystery and adventure, others with reflection, creativity, and joy.
Every new summer at Camp Jaie Reau will bring fresh challenges and deeper friendships. The six main characters—Kai, Kell, Bella, Tarena, Jessica, and Eliza—will grow one year older with each adventure, allowing readers to see them change, mature, and learn alongside the turning of the seasons. Through their eyes, the camp will continue to evolve—its stories widening like ripples across Lake Jaiera.
But the story doesn’t end when the buses leave or the summer fades. I also plan to create a collection of short stories that follow the characters throughout their school year—revealing glimpses of their everyday lives, their families, and the adventures that shape who they become when they return to camp the following summer.
These stories—both big and small—are all part of the same living universe. A universe built not just for reading, but for remembering. A place where imagination meets friendship, where the smallest moments can still feel like magic, and where, no matter how much time passes, Camp Jaie Reau will always be waiting for the next summer to begin.
